A Star Coin can be obtained by either making contact with it or by tossing an object at it such as a Shell.Ĭollecting Star Coins is required to fully complete the game 100%. Star Coins are often found in secret areas or in various placements requiring the use of all the plumbers moves and abilities to obtain them. When revisiting a level after collecting a Star Coin, a blue transparent Star Coin will be in its place (similar to already-collected Power Stars in the 3D Mario games). When a Star Coin is collected, the player earns 1,000 points, and the Star Coin is displayed on the touch screen to indicate that it has been collected.
In this game, three Star Coins can be found in each of the game's levels (with the exception of Toad Houses and Warp Cannons). Star Coins make their debut in New Super Mario Bros.

There are three circus balls which the players can jump on to reach the first Star Coin. must avoid large icicles that fall onto the Ice Snake Block and platforms with spikes. When they comes out, they must fall through some Donut Blocks onto an Ice Snake Block, which must be used to progress through the level. The level starts with ice cubes, several Dry Bones and ? Blocks (one of which contains a Penguin Suit).
